About the role
As a Business Unit Manager, reporting to the General Manager Operations, this role contributes to the success of manufacturing, compliance, governance and has direct responsibility for strategy and the long-term sustainability of the maintenance assets. Through your team, you will deliver engineering and maintenance service and systems (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and hydro) to our iron and steel manufacturing plants, rolling mill, pellet plant and surrounding iron ore mines.
Key responsibilities:
- Improve the central asset reliability (outside battery limit of core plant assets) through strategic intervention of capital project, condition-based monitoring and a culture of root causation, risk assessment and management.
- Establish the overall plant asset management strategy for Manufacturing in collaboration with the Manufacturing unit managers.
- Coordinate the maintenance resources in all Manufacturing units to ensure standardisation of equipment and processes, and the optimal balance of skills and resources for the steelworks
- Assuming ultimate responsibility for external and internal engineering standards applied in Manufacturing, and the standardisation of maintenance processes within Manufacturing
- Sustain, through asset management, the common infrastructure of the Whyalla steelworks site to ensure capability in future years
- Deliver centralised business risk management including operational security risks and works insurance, in conjunction with head office
- Be a point of escalation for the manufacturing units and Power & Services Operations, in the event of complex faultfinding and major equipment failure
- Participate in Liberty Primary Steel strategic and operational excellence initiatives
- Minimise the risk to employees, contractors, and the environment

About your experience
Alongside your extensive leadership background, ideally including ferrous and/or non-ferrous metals manufacturing and maintenance, you will also be highly proficient in systems and processes. With your demonstrated capability in rotating equipment, hydraulics, design basics, and fundamentals of machines you will be well experienced with the likes of marine pumps, alternators, gas turbines, and embedded piping.
You also have:
- Relevant tertiary qualification (engineering, metallurgy, commercial, business management or similar)
- Exposure to Rotating Equipment (Boilers, Gas / Steam Turbine, HV applications and inter-connected NG/COG/BFG/ Oxygen pipeline is preferred.
- Strong IT skills, proficiency in SAP is essential
- Demonstrated leadership experience in manufacturing or relevant heavy industry engineering operation
- Success leading teams through change in a maintenance environment within a large manufacturing business
- In-depth understanding of manufacturing methodologies and continuous improvement processes
- Experience managing significant budgets
- Proven capability to successfully drive cultural change and efficiency improvements on a large scale either internationally, domestically or a combination of the two
